Welcome to Salto. We are pleased that you have chosen our dance program.
At Salto, we feel that we have the finest Dance Program in the Midwest.
All of our staff is highly qualified and has had years of training and
experience teaching children dance. We know that you and your child will
thoroughly enjoy and benefit from our program.
The following information will help you understand the structure and
format of our dance program. Please take the time to read it carefully and
discuss any of the information with your child.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to discuss
them with any of the staff members. Good parent-teacher communications is
vital to the success and continued growth of the program.
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
To encourage the learning process utilizing dance and music as a means
for creative development.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
PRE-BALLET (3 years old)
A forty-five minute creative movement class designed to introduce young
children to music and dance.
Basic motor skills, coordination, beginning ballet terminology, and
individual creativity will be incorporated into the children's class.
Children must be out of diapers!
Two semesters strongly recommended.
DANCE BASICS IV, V and VI (4, 5, and 6 years old)
An hour long dance class that includes both ballet and tap.
The emphasis in this class will be on developing rhythm and coordination
along with learning more advanced steps.
Dance Basics classes are designed to group children of the same age
together; for example, Dance Basics IV is for four year olds only. (Age of
the child at the beginning of the semester)
Two semesters strongly recommended as the curriculum includes full year's
content.
ELEMENTARY JAZZ (7 & 8 years old)
An hour long class designed to introduce basic jazz fundamentals to first
year students.
The focus will be on flexibility, isolations, and musicality. Two semesters
strongly recommended.
JAZZ I, II & III (9 - 12 years old)
Jazz classes that incorporate flexibility, classical jazz steps, and the
ability to execute a progression of steps across the floor.
These classes are designed to be taken in progression; Students must have
the instructor's permission to be in Jazz II and III.
Two semesters required.
INTERMEDIATE JAZZ (13 and up) & ADVANCED JAZZ
This class is for the progression dance student who has developed a
strong interest in jazz.
The student will learn more complex movement combinations as well as focus
on technique and performance.
Students enrolled in Advanced Jazz must have completed two semesters of
Intermediate Jazz and have the instructor's permission.
Two semesters required.
BALLET I, II, III, & IV (7 - 11 years old)
Classical ballet classes that focus on proper technique, flexibility, and
terminology.
These classes are designed to be taken in progression.
Instructor's permission required for Ballet III and Ballet IV.
Two semesters required.
BALLET V (11 and up)
For the progressing ballet student with a working knowledge of basic
ballet steps and positions.
Because students will be working towards going on pointe, proper body
alignment, technique, and line will be the main focus of this class.
This class meets twice a week in order to ensure the proper strength
necessary to go on pointe.
Instructor's permission required.
Two semesters required.
INTERMEDIATE BALLET (14 and up) & ADVANCED BALLET
For students who have completed Ballet V.
The focus of this class is on perfecting proper technique and body alignment
as well as musicality.
This class meets twice a week.
Instructor's permission and two semesters required.
TAP I (7 & 8 years old)
This class introduces the basic elements of tap dancing.
Simple tap steps and rhythms will be used and students will learn how to
accompany music with their taps.
TAP II (9 & 10 years old)
A progression of Tap I.
Students will learn more complex steps and combinations with a greater
emphasis on developing rhythm and musicality.
Instructor's permission required.
INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED TAP
(11 and up)
For students with a working knowledge of basic tap steps.
Rhythm and technique will be the primary focus as well as learning more
advanced combinations.
Instructor's permission required.
ADULT TAP
A basic tap class for beginning to intermediate dancers.
This is a fun class for those who want to learn new steps while moving and
having fun.
HIP-HOP I (10 - 14 years old)
A dance class that incorporates "street dance" moves with the latest pop
music.
A fun and funky dance class.
HIP-HOP II (15 and up)
A dance class that incorporates "street dance" moves with the latest pop
music.
Focus is on performing and musicality as well as incorporating individual
elements of style.
CLASS ATTIRE
All dance students are to wear a solid colored leotard with pink
tights.
Ballet students need to have pink ballet shoes.
Ballet skirts may be worn.
For jazz, black jazz shoes are required.
Jazz students may also wear black jazz pants in addition to their
leotard and tights.
For tap, black tap shoes are required.
Tap students may also wear black jazz pants in addition to their
leotard and tights.
Long hair must be pulled back for all dance classes.
All dance supplies can be purchased at Trep Art Dance Supply stores
located in Brookfield and Milwaukee.
DANCE STUDIO POLICIES
- No gum, food or drink allowed in the studio.
- No street shoes allowed on the studio floor.
- Students should change in the dressing rooms, leaving jackets, bags and
footwear there during class.
- Parents must observe from the waiting area.
- Unless an emergency occurs, please do not interrupt a class that is
already in session. It breaks concentration and disrupts class.
- Hair must be neatly and securely tied or pulled back off of the neck and
out of the eyes.
- No long earrings, bracelets, or necklaces allowed.
- Tardiness in excess of 10 minutes will result in the student observing
class.
- Students who are disruptive in class will be asked to observe for that
class.
- NO MAKE UP CLASSES FOR CLASSES MISSED BY THE STUDENT.
BRING A FRIEND
There will be one day set aside during the fall and summer sessions when
your child may bring a friend to class to see how our classes are held.
SPRING DANCE PERFORMANCE
As our summer and fall semesters are dedicated to learning the technique
and style of each particular dance class, class time during the spring
semester is spent in preparation for our annual Spring Dance Performance.
This major event involves all students enrolled in the dance program.
Confirmation of a student's participation in this event is required by the
second week of the spring semester. Costumes fees are collected and costumes
are ordered by the end of December first of January. Backstage volunteers
are greatly appreciated during the recital.
NOTE: During the spring semester, any student's ABSENCE of more
than 4 CLASSES precludes participation in the Spring Dance Performance.
OBSERVING CLASSES
Parents are invited to watch classes at any time during the semester. We
ask that you observe from the observation areas at both studios. If you have
any concerns, questions or comments, please feel free to approach or contact
your child's instructor or the dance director.
MATERIALS SENT HOME
From time to time, there will be information sent home with the students.
Please READ and keep these notes handy for easy reference.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
In case of snow, ice, or severe cold weather, we will notify WTMJ (620AM), WQBW (97.3FM), WISN (1130AM), Channel 12 TV, WKLH (96.5FM), and
WHQG (102.9FM) to broadcast a closing bulletin. Cancelled classes will be made up. Salto, Inc will not be responsible for errors broadcast on radio or television.
MEDICAL FORM
There is a medical form enclosed with this packet. Each student must have
a medical form on file at Salto. Please fill out the form and return it to
the gym office.
PAYMENT PROCEDURE
It is preferred that the full class fee be paid before your child's class
begins. Payments may be made in two installments. Please make arrangements
at the office. A $10.00 late fee will be added to your balance each month
the balance is delinquent.
